Why we created it
We saw much discourse around flags mainly starting with the original Philadelphia pride flag introducing the black and brown stripes, and it got worse over time with each subsequent variation of the flag.
How is it different?
Unlike most of it's predecessors this flag has official documentation so the meanings of it's elements should be much more clear. It also is heavier on symbolism and calls back to it's predecessors.
The base rainbow is the same as the original Philadelphia Pride Flag with the exception of the shade of yellow. This keeps the black and brown stripes at the top as opposed to on the chevron. This is because the origin and meaning of these 2 stripes is often misunderstood and forgotten, causing discourse. The black is also derived from the Victory over AIDS flag.
The original Gilbert Baker pride flag (1978) introduced the yellow stripe meaning sunlight. Given the idea of the strong golden yellow from the intersex flag, and the fact that historically the original shades of the rainbow have been changed or lost, it made sense to combine them into one.
The intersex flag's circle is centered along the yellow stripe. The circle is thickened to further it's meaning of strength and unity. The circle is reminiscent of the sun. There is a yellow border circle around it acting as if it was the sun glowing. The chevron stripe represents this sunshine reaching to all corners of the queer community.
The 90 degree chevron is aligned to the off centered yellow stripe. It has the trans flag stripes the same way they are on the progress flag while also being the same widths. The chevron being shifted represents gender nonconformity and the beautiful breaking of traditional gender roles from the inclusion of different identities.
Following the motif and symbolism of the sun I wanted to make it part of the name. Avoiding sounding like an "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reference was a bit tricky. Eventually my friend Adda Macleod came up with dawn. I liked this because it references the sun while also implying stronger brighter days ahead.
